Another HFMA year has passed and Rich Imbimbo and I
represented the Appalachian Chapter HFMA board at the Annual
National Institute (ANI) this year in Seattle. It’s a
pleasure to have the opportunity represent our chapter and
receive awards on behalf of the chapter showing the many
hours of dedication our volunteers give freely of
themselves.
The
metrics tool used to monitor individual chapter performance
comes from 2 reports that are continuously updated with HFMA
National. The first is the Davis Chapter Management System
and below I will explain how we faired. The important thing
to understand is most of the indicators are directly related
to membership, some recruiting but mostly retention, and
education hours per member. Our total membership at the
beginning of the 2008/2009 year was 315.
This year our chapter received four awards listed below with
a brief description of that award:
Award of Excellence for
Education – The John M. Stagl Silver Award:
This award recognizes chapters that achieve outstanding
performance in educational programming.
Last year we had 15.43 hours per member and to achieve the
gold we had to be between 15.11 and 19.75. Our chapter
ended the year with 16.04.
Award of Excellence for
Certification – Gold: This award recognizes
chapters that achieve outstanding performance in
certification support. The honor is based on an increase
in the number of chapter members who pass the
certification examination in a chapter year.
This year we had 15 members pass a certification exam and we
needed 8 to achieve the Gold award.
The C. Henry Hottom Award for
Educational Performance Improvement:
This award recognizes chapters that achieve a significant
increase in educational performance form year to the
next. The award is based on exceptional growth in
registrant hours over the past year.
Last year our chapter achieved total registrant hours of
4,722.51 and to receive this award we needed a greater than
6.80% increase in this number or 5,043.64. Our chapter
achieved total registrant hours of 5,053.01.
The Helen M. Yerger Special
Recognition Award – Education: This award
recognizes chapters for outstanding performance achieved
by excellent efforts in programs.
Our chapter received
this award for the Healthcare 101 education session we
offered to our members. Mike Rupert did an excellent job
of completing and submitting this for the Yerger award.
Great Job, Mike!
It
takes a lot of effort of everyone involved to make an
impression for our chapter like this. I personally would
like to thank each of our board members, committee members,
and others who have so kindly given their time to support
the chapter’s mission of providing excellent quality
education to our members.
The
above awards are indicators that we are achieving the goals
set forth by our members of quality education programming.
We continue to find ways to enhance programming yet remain
cognizant of individual time constraints and the financial
constraints placed on many healthcare organizations today.
However, as a chapter we are able to continue to provide the
programming expected because we continue to have a
reasonable level of participation from our members. I think
there are always opportunities to increase participation and
each board member, committee member, or volunteer would
appreciate any feedback on ways we can improve.
I
would encourage each of you that attend our meetings to take
the opportunity to thank all the individuals you see at the
next meeting who make this chapter function because without
them we would not have the ability to do what we do for you,
our member.
Thanks for a great year and I look forward to working with
everyone over the next year with a great team of highly
motivated individuals that make our chapter work!
